A study by the World Health Organization has revealed that South Africans pay more for private health 
care than those from European countries.
With the country in a recession, fewer and fewer South Africans have medical aid. And those who once had a medical aid plan have given up on them. They’re just too costly.
Health minister, Aaron Motsoaledi is forever saying that the private sector is only providing care to 16% of the population. That is while the public sector has to cater for all the others.
Van Buuren believes tje scheme will provide medical schemes with the chance to partner with the government. He added that he felt that the NHI was an opportunity for their business, saying that they were already adding value to national health through Pharmacy Direct, a courier division.
A Value Chain of Healthcare Services Expected?
Pharmacy Direct won a contract from the Department of Health to deliver medicine to patients in various parts of South Africa.
