Hospital plans are relatively new in South Africa. They have both upsides and downsides.
On the upside, they tend to be a lot cheaper than full medical insurance. But hospital plans do not cover the day to day cost of medicine or visits to a GP or specialists.
Nor, and this is important, do hospital plans cover treatment for cancer that may involve regular and frequent day visits to a hospital. You may need to make separate provision for such dread disease cover.
