The medical scheme offers six options from Classic Core through to the KeyCare Core network. The hospital plan covers all the services offered in a hospital such as surgery and the related accounts and anesthetics.
Such costs are covered only if a member is admitted to hospital and Discovery medical aid have approved admission and treatment prior to a member's admittance. Typically, trauma units and outpatients are not considered a hospital event unless a member needs to be admitted.
Discovery's Core Series offers cost-effective in-hospital medical cover as well as cover for chronic medication. Hospital cover is unlimited and refers to admission to any private hospital or a hospital in the scheme's network. The plans offer cover for up to 90 days up to a sum of R5 million for each member in case of medical emergencies when travelling outside the country.
On the Classic Core and Essential Core plans, members are permitted to go to any private hospital but on the Delta plans members must go to a hospital within the Delta network in order for the scheme to cover the stay and treatment in full.
Coastal Core plan
For the Coastal Core plan, members are expected to go to a hospital within one of the four coastal provinces in order to receive full cover.
If a coastal hospital is not utilized then the scheme only pays a maximum of 70% of the hospital bill and the member will have to pay the outstanding fees. The hospital cover includes the hospital account and all other accounts accrued during the stay such as anesthetists, admitting doctors and other approved healthcare professionals.
A Discover Health hospital plan provides peace of mind cover in case of emergencies. A medical emergency is a sudden and usually unexpected onset of a health condition that requires urgent medical or surgical treatment.
Should you not receive treatment the condition will cause serious impairment to bodily functions or organs and your life is placed in jeopardy. The hospital plans cover medical transport in case of emergency.
Cover may be subject to certain scheme rules. For example a member may incur additional expenses during a hospital stay that the scheme does not cover such as private ward costs. There are also some procedures, medications and newer technologies that require separate approval from the scheme.
The hospital plans further cover certain investigative procedures such as gastroscopies and colonoscopies. Members are required to pay the first R2 600 of the scope fees and the scheme will pay the balance.
